Day 14: Flee Fornication

Audio: Malik Ewan
1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

When it comes to fleeing away from sexual lusts, young Brother Joseph is a hero for many of us young men. Consider also that the sexual advances of Potipher’s wife occurred over a period of time. It was after a while that she grabbed at him in desperation. I thank God he ran, so we can also know that we can run when sexual enticements present themselves.

Yes, as a man you can run from an obvious sexual advance and not be less of a man. At the end of the day, you must ask yourself this – whose praise is more important, those of the lost men encouraging sexual promiscuity as a sign of masculinity or that of heaven celebrating sexual purity? The same goes for the young ladies, as it seems virginity has lost its sacredness in the world.

I am reminded of a young man on campus who said a girl came and intruded his room and sat on the bed saying she was ready for him and she wasn’t going to leave until they had sex. He must have read about brother Joseph because he sure left that room.

Another story I heard recently was that of a colleague whose female landlord was making sexual advances at him in his young years. She would be out in the open with loose clothing or come out of the bathroom barely covered. That unsaved young man, despite even the warnings of an unsaved friend, later came to disclose that “he couldn’t resist.”

The circumstances may be varied and multiple in your life today, but the word of God provides the same answer – flee fornication. Fleeing can take many forms which are quite justified if you must choose between the sanctity of your soul and fulfillment of a carnal desire. It could be breaking off a relationship that has started to go down the wrong road. It could be deleting or blocking a contact. It could be desisting from visiting the home of a friend who there are emotions with.

Whatever you do, take heed to the word of the Lord today – flee fornication.

Prayer Starter

Lord, I know there are times of weakness and times our hearts get distracted. But God, help me to always know that I live in your constant presence, that you are always there watching. Like Joseph, give me the resolve to ask, How can I do this thing and sin against my God?

Day 13: The Joy of Community

Audio: Malik Ewan
2 Timothy 2:22: Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

Today’s scripture sternly warns us to “flee” youthful lusts. It does not encourage us to meddle or fool around with youthful lusts. This is what many of our young people do sadly. They think it’s okay to do everything sexual except the actual act of intercourse. This is like playing with fire. Soon enough, you will get burnt.

As a young man reading this scripture, I found it quite interesting that the antidote to youthful lusts was to run from it and instead to find like-minded Christian friends to pursue God with. Around that time, I was becoming friends with a group of young men and women who in high school found their joy in the things of God. The truth is they weren’t perfect, but their motivation and trajectory was one of leaving and forsaking sin and chasing after the righteousness of God. We had this declaration that saved us from a lot of youthful lusts –

iTURN (I Trade Ungodliness for Righteous Newness).

For me, this was the first instance this scripture proved itself in my life. We spent our lunch times fasting and reading the Bible. We’d walk home after school and they would sing (while I hummed in my mind lol) and talk about God all the way. Friday nights were spent praying from 11pm to 1am, sometimes going to 3am. This was our joy found in community among likeminded Christian youth.

In University, in my first week I ensured I found the orientation booth of the Universities and Colleges Apostolic Ministry (UCAM). Here again, to a much greater degree I found the joy of community, now among like-minded Apostolic believers.

If you think about it, all our friendships are pulling us in one direction or the other. Ask yourself then, is my company impressing upon me a life of true righteous, faith, charity and peace? If not, seek to draw closer to persons who have that mindset and find the source of their affection – Jesus Christ.

Prayer Starter

God, bring me close to those who desire to call upon you out of a pure heart. Help me to sever every ungodly connection and soul tie that influences me to compromise your standards of holiness, in Jesus name.

Day 12: True Pleasure in Jesus

Audio: Malik Ewan
Romans 14:17: For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.

The ultimate standard of purity is Jesus Christ Himself. The ultimate source of pleasure is Jesus also! True pleasure comes from God.

This is not what the world teaches though. Your unsaved friends will want you to think that they are having all the fun and freedom, and that a life of sin is the best life yet. Meanwhile, you may be looking at the “restrictions” and rules that you live by as a form of bondage. You wonder why you must be holding back sexual emotions and not letting them roam freely. You wonder why you have been deprived the pleasures of sex. These are all mind games of the devil playing on your flesh just like he did Eve.

The greatest liberty any human can find will be found in Jesus Christ. This is the blessed life, not another!

When you find your peace and joy in the Holy Ghost, you start to find the things of God more interesting and intriguing. Church becomes not just a boring meeting place but a joyful, supernatural encounter with God. When the joy of the Holy Ghost grips you, you start to find that youth meetings and camps and discussions among Christian friends are your happy place. Then when you’re alone you find that you just want to sing songs and worship the Lord. You use your talents and skills to find things to do for God. Soon enough you recognize that you don’t feel in bondage anymore! You start to see that your friends are actually bound to their life of sin and would love to get out if they could and that you are the one living the best life!

Finding true pleasure in Jesus will transform your days. What ways can you find to enjoy the presence of God and live an active life? Make a list of all the things you can do as a young Christian that Jesus would be pleased to abide with you in.

Prayer Starter

Oh, Lord my truest pleasure is found in You! Let the joy of the Lord be found in my heart and teach me how to entertain Your presence daily. Come Lord and inhabit my life.

Day 11: Sexual Purity – a Living Sacrifice

Audio: Malik Ewan
Romans 12:1  … present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

I think I’ve figured it out – the reason why we struggle with sexual purity. Maybe it’s because this body always feels entitled to some illegal sex. Doing wrong overall seems to be accompanied by a certain amount of excitement and intrigue once you quiet the voice of conscience prodding you. If we can’t bring ourselves to do the actual deed, we want to go get it in the movies, in the music videos, in the social media pics and videos. And some get their sexual pleasure from masturbation.

Many scientist say masturbation is just a natural part of human development. However, if we are to have sexual purity we have to take a different stance. Masturbation is a way that both men and women use to gain sex gratification to please the flesh. It is many times coupled with some sort of pornography, imagination of sexually promiscuous thoughts and nowadays, sex toys.

The news recently shared that since the current worldwide lockdowns, one of the products more in demand now are sex toys. This seems to be the escape route for many when human interaction is difficult.

Yet, the word of God instructs us how we should treat our bodies. We must not give over ourselves to lust but instead present our bodies to the Lord. It takes sacrifice yes, to give up what you think is your natural entitlement and recognize that God is concerned about what you do in your body.

If you struggle with this today, it’s time for a change.

Let’s pray…

Prayer Starter

God, I offer all of my body to you. Lord, purge and adorn me in your righteousness. Have your way in me Jesus.

Day 10: The Eyes are the Windows to the Soul

Audio: Malik Ewan

Psalms 101:3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.

Pornography comes in different forms. Most persons are aware of visual porn – the sex magazines, the porn films, the nude photos, etc. Included in this is a form of porn known as softcore porn. This is the form often depicted in movies which portray romance scenes. And this is the form many Christians are most open to so much that we don’t recognize it as porn. Closely linked with the visual is the auditory accompaniments with porn. We read porn in novels and encounter it in text messages. There is outright porn and there is subtle porn. Just like 50 shades of…sin

Today’s verse gives us a few clues how to overcome pornography. First, we must acknowledge that we have control over what we put before our eyes. Ultimately, the switch is in our hand to remove pornographic material from our field of vision. But a state of addiction is reached when you lose this control. Dealing with addiction at that point will require much more work, much fasting and prayer. Some persons will even need the help of a counsellor at this point.

The next clue is the hate sin. To break free from pornography you must begin to hate the evil and love the good. It means that your mindset must become one that porn is repulsive. How do you achieve that? You must delight yourself always in the Lord so much that His constant presence surrounds you. You recognize that there is never a moment that His Holy presence is not near you and that He is not pleased with pornography.

Job says, “I have made a covenant with my eyes, why then should I look upon a maid?” (Job 31:1). When you distance yourself from pornography you must make conscious effort not to be drawn back into it. Not only should you make a covenant with your eyes, but ultimately your covenant must be with God.

Do you struggle with pornography?

Let us pray…

Prayer Starter

Today, Lord I confess that I belong to you, every part of me. My body is your temple and I will have to give account of what is done in it. Jesus, have your way and purify my members in your blood.

Day 9: Ways to Overcome Pornography and Masturbation

Audio: Malik Ewan

Colossians 3:1-2: If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

The Word of God offers guidance to deal with any and every one of life’s issues. Porn and masturbation are no different. We must acknowledge first of all that it is God’s desire that we live holy (1 Peter 1:16). The desire for a holy life in Christ will motivate us to give up every care of this world. You will find that God not only encourages you to want to live holy, but He gives you the power to live above sin! Colossians 3:1-17 gives us some important tools which we will use as principles to overcome porn and masturbation.

5 Steps to Victory over Porn and Masturbation

  1. A change of heart and a change of mind.

The scriptures are clear that the first step to a renewing of the mind is repentance. You have to spend much time in prayer for repentance. The other aspect to setting your affections right comes from meditating on what the scriptures say about these sins.

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
  1. Put action to your prayer

Prayer and the word must then be combined with obedience. Your test of obedience will be whether you truly cut out these habits or not. This is what is meant by mortifying your members. You stop doing these works and become dead to their temptations as you meditate and put God’s word into practice.

Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
  1. Throw out the old and replace it with the new

You will have to delete and block pornographic websites, pictures, and movies. You may need to change the friends you keep because the devil will use them to drag you back into his grip. Instead, do things that encourage productive and righteous thoughts, affections and behaviours.

Colossian 3:9  Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10  And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
  1. Accountability

You are first accountable to God and His word. Next you are accountable to yourself to get it right. You also need, very importantly, a person to be accountable to – it could be a friend, a counsellor, a leader or a support group. This will also help to remind you that you are not alone.

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
  1. Remind yourself daily of the reward for living in purity
Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Prayer Starter

Jesus, there is power in your name to break every chain. Break these chains from me as I submit to your will today.

Week 2 – Pornography, Masturbation, and the Source of True Pleasure

Day 8: Pornography and Masturbation

Audio: Malik Ewan

Galatians 5:19 – 21: Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

It is said that “the eyes are the windows to the soul”. While true, each of the 5 senses can be seen as windows to the soul. These are the gates to one’s heart. In considering pornography and masturbation one can see where the senses of touch, seeing and hearing play an active part in the process.

While watching porn and masturbating are pleasurable to the flesh, they become snares in one’s life over time. Soon enough an addiction may develop which causes the person to not be able to function from day to day. I’ve heard of one case where a husband was so addicted to porn that he lost his desire for his wife and instead turned to porn to satisfy his sexual needs! As scriptures explain, a man becomes a slave to whatever overcomes him. (2 Peter 2:19).

The consistent pattern we will see is that sexual lust starts out pleasurable, fun, exciting. But give it some time and these immoral seeds start to spring like serpents to cripple one’s soul. Ultimately, as James tells us, lust brings forth sin which brings about death (James 1:14-15). In order words, when you give in to these lusts, at the end they will leave you feeling tormented, unhappy, confused, and spiritually dry and empty.

Tomorrow we will look at practical ways to break these sexually addicting habits using the Word of God. Today I want you to acknowledge that pornography and masturbation are indeed wrong and that God wants you to overcome these and live a sexually pure life before Him.

Let’s pray…

Prayer Starter

Lord, I recognise that both males and females struggle with pornography and masturbation. These snares have dragged many of us down the wrong road many times. Father, lead out of bondage and free us from these immoral habits, in Jesus name.

Day 7: There’s Victory in Jesus

Audio: Malik Ewan

Romans 8:31: What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

We will overcome every pressure of life only through Jesus Christ. It is a consoling thought to think that Jesus was faced with sexual temptations just like we are. Hebrews 4:15 tell us that he “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” Isn’t that something worth marveling about?

Not only does it tell us that yes, we can overcome sexual temptations, it also shows that being tempted alone does not condemn us. When the devil puts a temptation before us, he is doing his job (for he is a tempter by profession). Our response is the deal-breaker. When we are enticed, that is the beginning of the end, but Christ can deliver you wherever on the spectrum you fall. Lust produces enticement, then comes deception and then the sin.

The man Christ Jesus faced these temptations we face and yet He did not sin. He sharply rebuked the devil when he came with his tricks! We must do the same, and we have Christ in our hearts empowering us to do just that.

Through Jesus Christ we can overcome every form of sexual temptations. “For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour [help] them that are tempted” (Hebrews 2:18). We must not see ourselves as mere flies being swat down by the buzz of sexual immorality. We must recognize we have the greatest intercessor, help and Comforter with us – in Jesus Christ!

Prayer Starter

Jesus, your word declares that the chastisement for my peace was upon you. I know that where I am weak, thou art strong. Oh, Lord rescue my heart from sexual immorality and grant me freedom in You today!

Day 6: “It Was Good.”

Audio: Malik Ewan

Genesis 2:24-25: Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed

It was good.”

These words have often been used to describe acts of fornication. It highlights in one way how the standard of what is “good” has been warped, re-wrapped and presented back to us. The scriptures warned us – woe unto them that call evil things good! (Isaiah 5:20).

In Genesis 1 we find God’s stamp of approval on everything He created when He saw that, “It was good”. What is good in the world and what is good for us rests solely on God’s standard of goodness. One way of saying “it is good” could also be that it works the way it is supposed to.

When sin entered, we lost the ability to fully function like we were created to. Solomon came to this conclusion in Ecclesiastes 7:29 – “that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.” No wonder the world is in chaos today. It explains why we have so many groups advocating for all sorts of ungodly sexual “rights”. Now there are people who believe sex is just another physical appetite that must be catered to like hunger or sleep. This they say without acknowledging that hunger, sleep and any other human drive are also subject to a higher law by the One who created man.

Unlike the need for sleep and hunger, sex is much more complex. When you recognize that this body was created to be the temple of God’s Spirit, it will affect how you view who should enter that body through sex, and in what context. (1 Corinthians 6:15-20). As God created it in the beginning with Adam and Eve, the context of marriage between a man and a woman is the Bible’s only prescription for this sacred act called sexual intercourse. So when a married woman says to her husband, “It was good…” then we know it was truly good!

To walk in sexual purity we must believe and understand that God created human nature and sexual desire as good things but mankind’s bondage to sin has made them weapons of mass damnation. Yet there remains hope for those who choose to live within the precinct of God’s rule, that you can enjoy the fulness of sexual satisfaction if you commit to walk in God’s plan. Later we will delve into sexual purity in the context of marriage and in the important stages of singleness, whether God is leading you into lifelong marriage or lifelong singleness.

Think on these things…

Prayer Starter

Oh God, my Lord, open my eyes to see beautiful things out of your word. Let your thoughts and purpose for purity be accomplished in me and I submit to your plan for my life.

Day 5: How God Sees You

Audio: Malik Ewan
Ezekiel 16:6: And when I passed by thee, and saw thee polluted in thine own blood, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live; yea, I said unto thee when thou wast in thy blood, Live.

We all have a story worth telling.

One summer morning I was lying down in bed. By this point in life, I had taken “wet dreams” to a different level by concocting my own dreams and letting them play out to my satisfaction. Now there I lay in my “mess” when I started to feel guilty about my thoughts and actions. Right there, something clicked. I felt filthy. Immediately I started to repent for all the times I “messed up”. God had come for me in my filthy state and the whole day I was conscious about it. Today, I can trace back any effort to break free from sexual immorality to that encounter.

We all know God sees us always, yet we are not always conscious of it. We may even blatantly ignore God’s presence when we want to do wrong and follow our fleshly lusts instead. (Isn’t it interesting that the only thing described in the scriptures as “desperately wicked” is the heart? Jeremiah 17:9).

We were created to entertain God’s presence, but we find ourselves entertaining other “presents” to our own detriment. These sugar-coated traps of lust and sexual pleasures seem to be irresistible to our carnal appetites and have the added powers of draining our consciousness of God’s presence.

Yet, God still seeks us out when we drift from His presence. Today, if you are a Hagar cast out of the house of promise as a result of breaking God’s covenant God wants you to know that He sees you. Yes, though we have a wicked heart, though we are polluted in our own blood, though we are messed up people, God still wants to show us His love.

And that is all because of where God wants to take us. He created us with eternity in mind. From the moment man entered the world, God saw the cross of calvary where His blood would need to be shed. He saw the resurrected people called His church walking in purity. He saw an eternity with His prized possession reigning forever at the end of all time and God said, It is worth it.

That’s something we can barely understand but it is something we must be thankful for! God sees us renewed in Him. He sees us free from sexual immorality. He sees us free from all forms of sexual sin! And today, if you are not in this state that He planned for you, there’s a lot of work to be done in surrendering your whole heart to His plan.

Let’s pray…

Prayer Starter

Heavenly Father, even as you have shown your great love, help me not to take your grace for granted. Help me to live above sin and walk holy in you. Help me not to ever forgot your sacrifice of blood for me.
